We are almost halfway through the year already! How is that even possible? We all agree that 2020 was a doozy. Our crazy covid year, spent almost entirely at home, led many to take on major and minor renovations, updates, and DIY projects that had been on the to-do list for a while. So, it's no surprise that our year at home had some major influence on this year's up and coming decor trends. Some of the 2021 home decor trends may surprise you, because they did me! Read on to find out the 8 Designs + Styles Trending Now!

2021: Designs, Styles, + Decor
1. Comfort
I don’t think anyone was walking around in their skinny jeans and heels everyday while working from home, conducting zoom school or homeschooling, or when preparing the twentieth meal of the day.
At home, we seek comfort-as we should! Home is your oasis, your happy place. It should make you not want to leave.
After spending an extended period in your home, you start to expect and desire more comfort and functionality out of things. That is exactly what led to many of the trends we see for this year.
Comfort is one of the number one items inspiring 2021 Home Decor Trends. Plush blankets, rugs, and throw pillows. Textures and colors that exude calmness and comfort are hot right now. Simply put, 2021 demands livable luxury, as this article describes it!

2. Calming Hues + Pops of color
Colors that are currently trending are mainly blues (navy seems to be the most popular), grays, and neutral tones, including natural or light wood elements. They all give off a calming and grounded vibe that many are craving after a year of chaos and uncertainty.
2021 is also seeing an uptick of bold, moody colors to contrast the light and airy feel of the main colors and trends of the home. These added pops of color provide a bit of personality and fun to your living space. This post details all the popular colors of 2021.

3. Function and Organization
This item doesn’t surprise me! When anyone is in the same space for too long, you start to realize what items are not functioning well, or specific items that could function better and provide a dual purpose.
Dual purpose furniture and areas of the home are on the rise. With school, work, and every day life all happening in the same space, we definitely need multipurpose living spaces coupled with durable, functional furniture and adequate storage. 4. Granny Chic / Cottage vibe
This is one 2021 Home Decor Trend that caught me by surprise! This trendy style goes by a few different names: cottagecore, modern rustic, Grand Millennial, old world, granny style, and granny chic-granny chic being my favorite, found here!
After reviewing multiple resources, this is indeed a trend that is here to stay. It is assumed the new and updated cottage style is due to many yearning to feel connected to family. This is an attempt to evoke that cozy, at-home feeling you get at Grandma’s house.

5. Wallpaper
Yep, another one I wasn’t expecting to see multiple times. Now, I will say I’ve noticed an increased use of wallpaper on my HGTV shows, but I really didn't think it was the up and coming trend. But, it is! Thankfully, the styles and designs are vastly different from what most of us remember from our childhood. Also, I discovered from this post, that they now make peel and stick wallpaper for easy removal.
So, if you decide to jump on the wallpaper bandwagon, do your future-self a favor and buy that kind! Otherwise, you may be cursing yourself when the trends change in a few years.

6. Dark or two-tone kitchen cabinets
I’ve been slowly seeing this one creep in the past year too. I like the added pops of color in the kitchen, and how it creates a truly unique space. However, I still love my all white, modern kitchens! This post from HGTV goes into detail about the hottest kitchen trends of 2021.

7. Greenery
This is a trend I definitely embraced before I knew it was "in"! Apparently, everyone is using plants to decorate and define their spaces! Plants not only provide oxygen and air purification (as well as other health benefits you can read about here!), but are also gorgeous to look at, making it the perfect decor item. Added greenery also adds to the grounded, natural vibe that is popular right now.
To the new plant parent, seek advice from an experienced plant parent. They can give you the best pointers on what plants to buy for your area. Ones that are low maintenance are usually at the top of the list! You can read more about popular design styles and other ways nature is influencing design trends here.

8. Scandinavian & Japandi Inspired Design Aesthetic
I recently wrote a blog post on Scandinavian inspired kitchens. At the time, I didn’t realize it was an up and coming home decor trend! Similarly, Japandi is focused on purposeful design elements, clean lines, and no clutter.
This post describes Japandi style as one that focuses on simplicity and function, where each item is carefully chosen with a purpose. This article, What Is Japandi?, explains in more detail the style and design elements that define Japandi.

Surprisingly, there are even more trends and styles than what is listed here. However, some do overlap. You can read all about additional 2021 home decor trends here.
